Solidago altissima is native across much of North America, mostly east of the Rocky Mountains, reaching into northern Mexico. This species is common in much of its range occurring on drier soils in prairies, old fields, meadows, roadsides, and woodlands; it is fairly tolerant of disturbed landscapes. S. altissima is a part of the Solidago canadensis complex, and is sometimes included in S. canadensis as S. canadensis var. scabra. It flowers from August to November.
